Former president of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), Lenworth Fulton, was today hailed as a titan and champion of agriculture during a special service of tributes held at the 4-H Centre at the Denbigh Agricultural Showgrounds in Clarendon.
Fulton, who also served as chief executive officer of the Rural Agricultural Development Authority and executive director of the Jamaica 4-H Clubs, died in hospital on December 8 last year.
Agricultural stakeholders described him as a model agriculturist who championed the interests of farmers, with particular emphasis on small-scale producers and young people in the sector.
Natanish Hines, parish manager of the Jamaica 4-H Clubs in Trelawny, said Fulton was “a titan of the agricultural community who understood the language of the land.”
She added that his mentorship paved the way for many who pursued careers in agriculture.
Garfield Ewart, director of field services at the Jamaica 4-H Clubs, said Fulton left an indelible mark on the agricultural sector and was a “fierce voice” for the unheard.
“Guided by integrity and an unwavering commitment to youth development, Mr Fulton was a visionary who led from the front. He was never afraid to speak on issues that mattered most, particularly the well-being and professional development of staff and youth farmers,” Ewart said, to echoes of approval from the audience.
“He was a voice for the voiceless. He was a fierce advocate for those in the agricultural sector who felt unheard. He championed the cause of small farmers and rural youth with passion,” Ewart added.
Following his tribute, Ewart presented a citation honouring Fulton’s contribution to agriculture to his widow, Alicia, and their son, Nathanael.
Among those in attendance were parliamentarian Robert Montague and Mayor of May Pen, Councillor Joel Williams.
The service of thanksgiving celebrating Fulton’s life will be held at the Linstead New Testament Church of God in St Catherine on Saturday, January 10, at 10:00 a.m.
