Ambassador Curtis Ward, Jamaica’s former representative at the United Nations, has died.
Ward passed away late last night at his home in Maryland in the United States.
Ward, who was born in Treasure Beach, St Elizabeth, and attended Manchester High School and later Howard University in the US, joined the Jamaican Foreign Service in the 1970s before settling in the United States, where he worked as an attorney for many years.
He resumed serving the Government of Jamaica in an official capacity when he was assigned the UN role and remained active in regional and international security matters over the last two decades.
Ward, the founder of the Ward Post, was a prolific writer and a major contributor to The Gleaner newspaper.
He was also chairman of the Governor of Maryland Wes Moore’s Caribbean Community Council and was recently awarded the governor’s citation for his contribution to the State.
He was an attorney-at-law and international consultant, and former Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Jamaica to the United Nations with Special Responsibility for Security Council Affairs, serving on the UN Security Council from January 01, 2000, to December 31, 2001.
He had extensive knowledge and experience in national and international legal and policy frameworks for effective implementation of UN and other international anti-terrorism mandates, including countering and preventing violent extremism.
His expertise included capacity building in the legal and administrative requirements for effective implementation and enforcement of anti-money laundering and countering terrorism financing (AML/CTF); and extensive knowledge of the legal and regulatory requirements for effective implementation and enforcement of UN multilateral sanctions and US-imposed unilateral sanctions.
Ward’s published writings include issues related to Caribbean security; UN counter-terrorism policy; international sanctions; and international law and relations.
