The NWC said technical assessments revealed that roughly 500 metres of pipeline were severely damaged by Hurricane Melissa.

The National Water Commission (NWC) has introduced an adjusted water trucking schedule for Barrett Town, St. James, as restoration works continue following Hurricane Melissa. Under the new arrangement, water trucking will take place on Wednesdays.

“This scheduled approach will replace the previous ‘as-needed’ deliveries and provide more reliable and predictable access to potable water,” the commission said on Tuesday.

The NWC acknowledged the "significant inconvenience and hardship" for residents, saying it is yaking "all feasible measures to restore service as quickly and safely as possible".

It said technical assessments revealed that roughly 500 metres of pipeline were severely damaged, with parts of the roadway completely washed out, making immediate repairs unsafe.

As an interim measure, a relift pumping system is being installed to redistribute water into the community.

The NWC said the process, which includes civil works and pump installation, is expected to take four to six weeks.

“We are exploring ways to shorten this timeframe without compromising safety or reliability,” the NWC added.
