St Richard's Primary asks parents to collect children early amid protest over fatal police shooting

St Richard's Primary School on Red Hills Road in St Andrew has asked parents to collect their children ahead of normal dismissal time following a fiery roadblock mounted by angry residents protesting a fatal police shooting this morning.

The fire has since been extinguished.

The incident happened along Karl Samuda Avenue this morning.

In a notice to parents, the school noted that the situation has not negatively affected the school and that normal activities continued on the school compound.

A strong police presence is now in the area.

“While we encourage parents to remain calm, we encourage you to collect your children if you are able to do so safely. Please bear in mind the conditions in the surrounding area and exercise caution when travelling to and from the school. Teachers will record the time each student exits the school. We continue to monitor the situation closely and will keep you informed of any significant developments. Our priority remains the safety and well-being of our students and staff, and we will continue to act in their best interest,” the school notice read.

The man known by his alias, ‘Mad Dog’, was shot and killed by the police this morning.

However, the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting have not yet been ascertained.

In response, angry residents of the area mounted a fiery protest along sections of Red Hills Road in St Andrew.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing the incident.

As of September 13, some 215 people have been killed by the security forces in alleged confrontations.
